Dr. Sonny was an enlisted sailor from December 1967 to April 1977, serving as a nuclear reactor operator and supervisor, chief nuclear machinist, and high pressure welder on nuclear submarines and submarine repair ships. He was commissioned as a Naval Officer in April 1977 and served for 18 years as Engineer Officer aboard eight pacific fleet commands.
